Where Ya Been?

I haven’t posted on Hurl’s Treehouse for a bit, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been writing. This summer or early fall I’ll release my third book, this one a collection of short stories. Entitled, Tales from the Deli, with the subtitle of 13 Short Stories (and Two Poems) Twain Never Wrote, it’s a project that has consumed most of my writing time in the past few months.

Right now, I’m waiting for my graphic designer to provide cover art. That sort of thing isn’t my forte, to say the least, so I leave it to the experts. While I wait, I continue to revise, hone, sharpen, so when Jenny finishes the cover, I can move quickly to publish.

This will be different than my other two books. The stories in Deli have little in common, except they all sprung from my twisted imagination. The deli idea is based on where I do my writing and has nothing to do with the patrons or workers at a deli. For the past few months, I’ve been bouncing back and forth among the baker’s dozen of stories, trying to make each a tasty delight.

Also on my to-do list is a Devlin Spudd sequel. I have a few chapters written, but they are more dross than gold, in definite need of the refiner’s fire. But one project at a time, and right now it’s Tales from the Deli.

When I was teaching, I never dreamed I would actually complete one book, let alone two or three or four. I never dreamed I would move to Illinois, spend thirty-three years teaching English (including AP Lit), coach Debate, move to Texas…I think you get the idea. Makes me think that dreams evolve and arrive on a serpentine path and rarely follow the blueprints I conceive in my tiny brain.

Shoot, I’m only 65 (words I never thought I’d utter). Who knows what the future might bring? Maybe I’ll become a jockey, teach ballroom dancing, or climb the highest peak in Florida. The last item is a trick; the highest point in Florida is Britton Hill at 345 feet above sea level. I could actually do that one.

If inspiration strikes, I’ll write a post. If you have any ideas, post them below and maybe I’ll follow your lead.

In the meantime, I’m still here, just doing some Deli work.

Thanks for reading!

    Thanks for the update, brother.
I am looking forward to this next book. I love the whole idea of it.
Meanwhile, I’m engrossed in continuing to work on my second music CD- maybe I should go to a deli and sit 😎

I don’t really have any ideas about what you should write about, I’m worried about myself – I do like scaling the tallest mountain in Florida idea. Road trip?

Can’t wait to hear more about your follow-up CD. You continue to grow as a musician. Any time you need an ear to listen, I’m available.
So you’re saying you won’t be taking ballroom dancing lessons from me? Ow, that cuts deeply.
